Rolling Dice

Dice Pool

When trying something risky or challenging, build a dice pool of D6 based on the situation and the character's skill.

See how this works by using the Dice Roller.

Check Dice

The GM will determine the number of check dice to add to the pool based on the situation.

You'll never roll more than 3 check dice.

Skill Dice

When a skill applies, add 1d6 to the pool for each skill point, which could be 0. Special abilities, and items may also add skill dice to the pool. You'll never roll more than 6 skill dice.

Important: Skill Dice should be a different size and/or color from check dice.

Success or Failure

Roll all dice together. The roll succeeds if any of the Check dice land on a 5+, or if any of the Skill dice is a 6. The number of 5ʼs or 6ʼs rolled may be used to determine the outcome. Failing forward is an option. A failed roll can be a success at a cost.

Saves

The Facilitator may request a Save roll in order to prevent something from happening to the character. For example, to avoid taking damage from a fall. A Save roll works just like a normal roll.

Crits

Example 1

Thor is going to use his hammer to attack an Orc. Thor is a new character and has Melee 1 for his skill. Because there isn't anything else impacting his attack roll, the GM determines that it is a normal test and the player should add 2d6 "check" dice to the pool. Because Thor's Melee is 1, the player will add 1d6 "skill" dice to the pool. The player would roll 3d6 in total. Roll Examples:

Example 2

Thor is trying to cross a mossy log and is weighted down with extra gear. Thor is more of a bruiser and doesn't have an Agility skill that will help him out. Also, because he's weighted down with extra gear, the GM determines it is a disadvantage test so the player should add 1d6 "check" dice to the pool. Since Thor isn't very agile, the player will not add any "skill" dice to the pool. The player would roll 1d6 total. Roll examples:

Example 3

Thor is trying to intimidate an NPC to extract some information from them. Thor is a bruiser and has the Intimidation skill at level 2. The NPC is tied up to a chair and is already pretty nervous about the situation, so the GM determines this is an advantage test so the player should add 3d6 "check" dice to the pool. Since Thor has the Intimidation skill at level 2, the player will add 2d6 "skill" dice to the pool. The player would roll 5d6 total. Roll examples:
